3rd May 1981 West Germany

The Federal Republic of Germany mobilises its armed forces as disturbances continue in East Germany. Intelligence sources indicate that up to six Soviet divisions are occupied in suppressing uprisings in East Berlin and Leipzig.

The US, Dutch, British and Canadian forces stationed in West Germany are also mobilising. Belgium has declared it will not participate in any such manoeuvres for fear they will be deemed 'provocative' by the Soviet Union. France's position is yet to be made clear but all leave has been cancelled in the French armed forces.

There is a marked increase in Soviet naval activity in the Baltic, North Atlantic and Mediterranean. There are reports of widespread Soviet troop movements in Czechoslovakia and Poland.
